Cofio Elfed - Cwlwm article July/August 2024 issue

There was a special evening at the Pen-y-bont Independent Chapel on Sunday night, 16th June to remember 150 years since the first sermon of Howell Elvet Lewis (Elfed) - minister, hymnist, poet and ex-archdruid of Wales. It is clear that he was talented from a very young age - he was only 13 when he delivered his first sermon! The occasion was organized by the 'Gangell Committee' and the chairman of the committee, Delme Phillips, Gilfach-y-Jestyn presided over the evening. There was an opportunity to learn about Elfed's history, hear and sing along to some of his hymns, and be entertained by video clips and a quiz. A wonderful way to celebrate and remember one of our local's talented celebrities.

In addition, in June the Gangell Museum celebrated sixty years since its opening on June 13th, 1964. If you would like to visit the Gangell, or read about the history of Elfed and the work of establishing the Gangell as a museum, please browse the memorial website: www.coffaelfed.cymru.
